🏴‍☠️ Shots Fired, Senior Officers Kidnapped

On March 27, 2025, an alarming PIRACY incident unfolded just 16 nautical miles south of Accra, Ghana, highlighting the persistent maritime threat in West Africa. At approximately 1753 UTC, the fishing vessel MENGXIN 1, registered in Ghana, was targeted by a heavily ARMED group of SEVEN pirates

Pirates Board Vessel, Kidnap Crew

During the brazen attack, pirates boarded MENGXIN 1, firing warning shots and swiftly gathering crew members onto the deck. Some crew managed to secure themselves in a designated safe area, enduring a tense THREE-HOUR SIEGE.

In a calculated move to hinder immediate communication, pirates seized mobile phones before escaping. The vessel’s CAPTAIN, CHIEF MATE, and CHIEF ENGINEER—all Chinese nationals—were discovered missing after the assailants fled, presumed kidnapped.

Following the harrowing ordeal, the remaining crew managed to navigate closer to shore to report the incident, hindered initially by limited mobile connectivity.

The vessel subsequently anchored at Tema Fishing Harbour, where Ghanaian authorities, including Marine Police and the Naval Intelligence of Eastern Naval Command, launched immediate investigations.

Regional Response and International Cooperation

Authorities rapidly disseminated information via the ECOWAS Multinational Maritime Coordination Centre (MMCC) Zone F, emphasizing a collective regional response under the Yaoundé Code of Conduct. This cooperation is critical not only for rescuing kidnapped crew members but also for apprehending pirates who jeopardize maritime safety and regional economic stability.

China’s Foreign Ministry recently confirmed the kidnapped crew, with efforts underway in coordination with Ghanaian authorities to secure their safe release.
