Deployment

How quickly can barriers be delivered?

Barriers can be delivered and deployed in up to 72 hours, depending on vessel schedule and regional availability.

Does installation require specialists?

No. Barriers are designed for installation by the onboard crew using standard ship equipment and our guidance.

How long does installation take?

It depends on vessel size and layout, but fitting typically takes approximately one minute per metre of rail. Two teams working port and starboard halve the elapsed time.

Can barriers be delivered offshore?

Yes. Equipment can be delivered alongside at port or offshore via OPL, depending on operational requirements.

Are barriers suitable for all vessel types?

Palaemon barriers are deployed on LNG carriers, tankers, container ships, bulk carriers, reefers, offshore vessels and other commercial ship types.

Operational

Do barriers interfere with vessel operations?

No. The system is designed to integrate with normal operations without affecting navigation, cargo handling or crew movement.

Where do we keep it between transits?

Most operators keep it on board. Some leave the barriers rigged on the guard rail permanently; others stow them flat in a deck store until the next transit. Across current deployments, no barriers have been returned because of onboard storage limits.

How much space does it take?

Less than most people expect. The panels nest flat, and one pallet (1000 × 1300 mm) holds 12 sets as a mixed pallet of top and bottom panels; each set covers 1 m of rail. A 200 m ship protected from the stern to the manifold on both sides needs 230 sets: 20 pallets, or about 26 m² of deck.

Does it stay rigged in port?

It can. Once installed, the barriers can stay in position during port calls, cargo operations and routine activities, and they are compatible with STS operations.

Can you store it ashore?

Yes. If you'd rather have it off the ship between transits, we can store it ashore. In practice, repeated port deliveries usually add more cost and admin than they save, which is why most operators keep it on board. Shore storage is available at our regional hubs, and for enterprise fleets we can quickly set up a custom hub in the location you prefer.

What happens if vessel schedules change?

The service is built for flexibility: barriers can be recovered, redeployed or repositioned as schedules evolve, and off-hired when a vessel leaves high-risk trade.

Commercial

Do we need to buy the equipment?

No. Barriers are rented as a service. Purchase options are available.

Is there a long-term commitment?

No. Operators deploy barriers for single transits, rotating schedules or fleet-wide programmes.

How does the cost compare with razor wire?

About the same annual cost per vessel, and much safer for the crew. We don’t publish prices because coverage differs on every ship; the calculator’s emailed plan shows pricing for your vessel and the razor wire comparison side by side.

How are logistics handled, and are they costly?

Delivery and recovery run through regional hubs near major routes, and all logistics costs are made clear up front, with no hidden costs. Because most operators keep the barriers on board, they are usually delivered once and collected once.

Can we trial it first?

Yes. The 3-month trial puts the barriers on one vessel, sized to the coverage you need, so you can judge it in service with your own crew.

Security

What threats are the barriers designed to address?

Unauthorised boarding attempts associated with piracy and armed robbery: attackers using ladders, hooks and poles from small, fast boats.

Are the barriers BMP MS aligned?

The deployment approach supports vessel hardening measures consistent with BMP Maritime Security (BMP MS) guidance and wider maritime security planning.

Why not just use razor wire?

Razor wire can be cut or bypassed, is rigged differently every time, and is hazardous for crew to handle: BMP MS itself advises PPE and wire hooks. Engineered barriers give a consistent, reusable physical barrier at about the same cost. See the full comparison.

How strong are the barriers?

Bottom panel: static load test up to 500 kg with no deformation or signs of breakage. Lashing straps: certified to 800 kg breaking strain. Straps per set: 4 — 2 × 4 m straps attach the bottom panel to the ship’s railing; 2 × 2 m straps secure the top panel to the bottom panel.
