Southeast Asia
HIGH THREAT Primary threat: armed robbery. High-risk areas: Singapore Strait, Batam approaches, Belawan anchorage.
Southeast Asia records some of the highest levels of maritime security incidents in the world, with armed robbery and boarding rising sharply on key routes. The region includes the Singapore Strait, the Malacca Strait and the Indonesian and Philippine archipelagos.
Unlike the Gulf of Aden or the Gulf of Guinea, the main threat is widespread armed robbery. Groups board ships underway or at anchor to steal stores, equipment, engine spares and valuables. Incidents are shorter, but the volume is a constant operational and security challenge.
Recommended posture: BMP Maritime Security, with physical barriers on the most vulnerable access points. Nearest Palaemon hub: Singapore.
